Watch Cattlemen to Cattlemen Week 13; Original Air Date: Tuesday, May 1, 2007

Cattle-on-feed numbers have been running below 2006 totals. With March placements now included, have we caught up with last year’s pace? Kevin Good of Cattle-Fax analyzes USDA’s latest cattle-on-feed report, including the continuing shift of cattle toward feedlots in the northern plains and Corn Belt states. For more information, visit www.cattle-fax.com.

Cattle feeding and ethanol production are sometimes seen as competing interests. But reporter Jim Whitt shows us that’s not always the case. In Mead, Nebraska, E3 BioFuels and Mead Cattle Company are cooperating in a very innovative and efficient manner. Manure from the feedlot is converted into natural gas to power the ethanol plant. Then the corn by-product from the plant is fed right back to the cattle, without the need for drying or transport. It’s a closed-loop system that is drawing national attention. For more on this innovative process, go to: www.e3biofuels.com.

Technological advances have always been critical to the success and profitability of the beef industry. Cattlemen to Cattlemen’s Kevin Ochsner shows us how the safe use of growth enhancement technology contributes to the quality and efficiency of beef production, and helps keep beef affordable for more consumers. For more information, visit: www.beeftechnologies.com.

You may know agriculture advocate Trent Loos from his radio broadcasts or newspaper commentary. Trent’s latest cause is to prevent a nationwide ban on horse slaughter, which is a humane alternative for dealing with aged horses that cannot otherwise be cared for. Actress Bo Derek is one of the leading celebrity activists to oppose horse slaughter, but offer no constructive alternatives. So Trent is organizing the “Bo Knows Best Journey” to deliver a truckload horses to Bo Derek’s California ranch. Find out how you can help support this effort at: www.facesofag.com.
