Feb 26: Estate Planning on Your Operation
No one likes to pay taxes, but there is one tax that those involved in agriculture especially dislike.  The estate tax can be a heavy burden on those attempting to pass a farm or ranch onto the next generation.  The estate, or death tax, can take up to 45% of the value of an operation when a family member dies.  Joe Guild, a Nevada attorney and NCBA members say there are things you can do to manage your tax burden.  “First, inventory your assets.  Get a will and update in regularly and consider consulting an estate planning attorney.”  Guild says it’s best to plan for the future, “The important thing is to start and plan for the inevitable.”

Feb. 26: 2008 ESAP Award Winner - Yolo Land and Cattle Company
Those who live and work on the land are, by nature, the most dedicated to preserving that land for the future.  No doubt, Yolo Land and Cattle Company, this year’s winner of the Environmental Stewardship Awards Program, is an operation that excels in the commitment to environmental stewardship demonstrated by each member of the Stone family.  Karen Stone says that, “I think we all passionately believe in what we’re doing.  I think that all of us feel the same way, that preserving the environment – not only our ranch, but the environment in general – is important for our next generations.”  To learn more about the Environmental Stewardship Awards Program and to nominate a farmer or rancher, visit: esap.beefusa.org
